News from the Secretary General
The past month has been eventful and busy, and I am pleased to share with you some of the key moments and activities. The highlight was certainly our Spring Conference on "Protecting the Procedural Integrity of Arbitral Proceedings" with over 330 participants.
Cooperation with the Legal Tech Association and online course: Artificial Intelligence for lawyers
Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence. It's certainly more than just a trend. We are pleased to announce that we have entered into a collaboration with the Bucerius Center on the Legal Profession and the Legal Tech Association Germany.
The DIS has improved its regional offering to its members through the establishment of DIS regional groups, based on the proven concept of the DIS40 regional groups.
On 3 April 2024, we reached a milestone: 1,000 proceedings have been conducted since 1 January 2018, the year in which the revised DIS arbitration rules came into force!
On 2 May 2024, the DIS Sponsorship Award 2023/2024 was awarded at the DIS Spring event. This was the twelfth time that the DIS Sponsorship Award was presented for an outstanding academic paper (e.g. dissertation, post-doctoral thesis) in the field of alternative dispute resolution.
We would like to invite you to our this year's summer party. Celebrate with us in a relaxed atmosphere in our beautiful garden in Bonn. You can expect a pleasant evening with culinary delights and a selection of drinks. Take the opportunity to make new contacts and cultivate existing relationships.
Lunch DIScussions: Persuasion and Psychology of Witness Evidence
The topic of the Lunch DIScussions on 11 April was 'Persuasion and the Psychology of Witness Evidence'. The event explored the complex interplay between the psychology of witnesses and arbitrators and the perceived persuasiveness of witness evidence.
Workshop: Mediating the Vis Case 2024 - 2nd edition of “The DIS goes Mediation”
On 26 and 27 April the DIS organized at its premises in Bonn an advanced mediation workshop for 19 students and coaches from 10 universities who had participated in the 31st Vis Moot Court.
Visit of international LL.M. students from Saarland University
On 29 April 2024, the DIS had the great pleasure of hosting a group of international LL.M. students with Stefan Weber from Saarland University at the DIS Office Bonn.
This year, for the first time, DIS actively supported and participated in the annual DKN Litigation & Arbitration Summit, a premier event for in-house counsel specializing in litigation and arbitration.
DIS Spring Conference 2024: Protection of the procedural integrity of arbitration proceedings
Hamburg, the city of trade, the city of bridges, and the city of this year’s DIS spring conference on the checks and balances for and the protection of the procedural integrity of arbitration proceedings.
Lunch DIScussions: 2024 IBA Guidelines on Conflicts of Interest in International Arbitration
The new 2024 IBA Guidelines on Conflicts of Interest in International Arbitration were the subject of the Lunch DIScussions on 16 May 2024 - a topical subject, which also perfectly followed the DIS Spring Conference 2024 in Hamburg.
Webinars: Making Third Party-Notices Work in Arbitration: The DIS' New Supplementary Rules for Third-Party Notices
A party that has lost an arbitration and seeks recourse from a third party (the producer in a supply-chain setting or the subcontractor in construction cases) runs the risk of losing twice as the facts and the law will be established anew in recourse proceedings.
ITA Arbitration Institutions Series - Webinar Interview Richard Happ and Ramona Schardt
In a webinar, held on 18 April 2024, by the ITA Institute for Transnational Arbitration, Ramona Schardt and Richard Happ presented the DIS and its unique features to an international audience.
International Collaboration Highlight: DIS Welcomes Delegation from Korea Fair Trade Mediation Agency
We were pleased to have hosted a delegation from the Korea Fair Trade Mediation Agency at our offices in Berlin on 29 May 2024. This meeting provided an excellent platform for productive and constructive discussions on mediation practices, including the nuances of different mediation procedures and practices.
DIS@LIDW: International and German Perspectives on Post-M&A Disputes
The DIS is delighted to support the London International Disputes Week (LIDW24), which takes place from 3 to 7 June. During the London International Disputes Week, DIS will host this event.
In the coming months, the DIS will be supporting a number of interesting events related to international arbitration. We will keep you informed as soon as concrete information becomes available.
