News from the Secretary General

It has been a year since I assumed the position of Secretary General of the DIS and it has been a very rewarding time for me. I have seen first-hand the invaluable contribution that arbitration and the DIS make in providing an independent, neutral, and impartial forum for the resolution of disputes.

Bilateral Arbitration Groups on our Website

Following the successful launch of our bilateral arbitration groups initiative, we have also published  information on it on our website. Here you will find an overview of all currently active bilateral arbitration groups with contact persons. 

DIS Gender Statistics and DIS-ERA Pledge Gender Champion Initiative

The DIS Gender Statistics for the year 2023 shows a record high for the appointment of female arbitrators in DIS arbitrations (24.34%, up from 23.58% in 2022) and a record high for the appointment of female party-nominated arbitrators (17.86%, up from 17.04% in 2022).

Lunch DIScussions: Dispute Resolution in the Digital Economy: Empfehlen sich Regeln der UNCITRAL zu E-Awards und elektronischer Verfahrenseinleitung?

The Working Group II of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) will deal with "Dispute Resolution in the Digital Economy". The focus will be on digital arbitration awards and the paperless initiation of arbitration proceedings. Is digitalisation even desirable here or is paper still indispensable for reasons of caution?

Hamburg International Arbitration Days 2024

The DIS will hold a side event on efficiency in the digital age as part of the Hamburg International Arbitration Days (HIAD). The 8th Hamburg International Arbitration Days will take place from 18 to 20 March 2024 and will again offer an opportunity for members of the German Arbitration Community to discuss pervasive problems of international arbitration with leading colleagues from Europe and the Americas.

20. Petersberger Schiedstage 2024: Arbitration in Times of War and Crises

Together with the publisher C. H. Beck, the DIS once again organises the Petersberger Schieds-tage. In 2024, they will focus on the topic of "Arbitration in times of war and crises". It seems as if the world can no longer get out of crisis mode.

Lunch DIScussions: Streitbeilegung auf der Überholspur: neue Hochgeschwindigkeitsverfahren der UNCITRAL

Working Group II of UNCITRAL: United Nations Commission on International Trade Law is currently working on highly expedited dispute resolution mechanisms, having become aware of a corresponding need in the high-tech sector, but also in other industries. 

DIS40 Retreat

The annual DIS40 retreat has just come to a close. It was a fantastic experience to meet at the German Arbitration Institute (DIS) at the headquater of the DIS in Bonn.

Lunch DIScussions: Schiedsverfahren im Life Sciences-Bereich

On 14 December 2023, the DIS organized a Lunch DIScussion on arbitration proceedings in the life sciences sector. The DIScussion was moderated by Inken Knief, partner at Hogan Lovells, with Ingrid Sollerer, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of Sandoz, Martin Fürle, General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer Europe of Daiichi Sankyo Europe GmbH and Oliver Brupbacher, partner at Bär & Karrer, as panelists. The DIScussion’s organizer was Torsten Lörcher, member of the DIS Board. 

Joint Event of Practice Group Settlement and DAA/DIA/DIS Arbitration Group: Settlement Facilitation in Nordic Countries

In the joint event of 9 January 2024 of the DIS Practice Group on Settlement and the DAA/DIA/DIS Arbitration Group Lotte Eskesen (Gorrissen Federspiel), Mikal Brøndmo (Haavind) and Robin Oldenstam (Mannheimer Swartling) discussed the approaches of arbitrators in Denmark, Norway and Sweden to settlement facilitation. The event was moderated by Nicoletta Kröger (CORVEL) and Ulrike Gantenberg (Gantenberg Legal). 

Lunch DIScussions: Enforcement of Investor-state Arbitration Awards against States: Developments in the United States and United Kingdom

This Lunch Discussion addressed recent developments in the enforcement of awards against States in the UK and the US. 

Jecke DIS: First Carnival of the DIS

Last Friday, our villa in Bonn was transformed into a carnival hotspot! The atmosphere was fantastic, the Kölsch beer delicious and the playlist carefully selected with lots of traditional carnival tunes. The highlight was the visit of the “Kölner Ehrengarde” and the “Dreigestirn” of the city of Rösrath, who made our first "Jecke DIS" event something very special with their great commitment and festive presence.

Exchange with the Ministry of Justice in Japan

On 6 December 2023 our Secretary General, Dr. Ramona Schardt, and Dr. Rouven Bodenheimer, Member of the Board, were pleased to be invited for an online exchange with members of the Ministry of Justice in Japan and arbitration practitioners who entrust DIS arbitration to efficiently resolve disputes.

DIS@CIAW2024: US-German Post M&A Disputes – Cross-Atlantic Perspectives

The DIS will hold a side event as part of the 3rd Annual California International Arbitration Week (CIAW). Also, the DIS is pleased to support this year the CIAW as a Nonprofit Partner.

DIS Activities around Vis Moot

The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is the largest and most prestigious competition for law students to foster the study and practice of international commercial arbitration. With close to 400 participating teams from all over the world it brings every year around 3500 students and arbitrators to Vienna.

DIS@PAW2024 on the Paris Arbitration Week 2024

The DIS will hold a side event in the framework of the Paris Arbitration Week. The DIS is pleased to support this year the Paris Arbitration Week as a Nonprofit Partner.

Vierländerkonferenz 2023: Arbitration Proceedings in A | CH | D | FL

For the first time, the Dreiländerkonferenz was held as a Vierländerkonferenz in Vienna on 1 December 2023. For DIS, it followed up on last year's successful event in Basel on "A Common Arbitration Culture in the DACH Region". 

DIS comes to Sofia: DIScover Arbitration “Made in Germany”

The DIS came to Sofia in the beginning of December 2023 and raised its flag for first time on Bulgarian soil. The purpose of the event was to introduce the DIS and make Bulgarian legal practitioners aware of the dispute resolution tools which the DIS can offer.

Solidarity Arbitration and Mediation Days 2023

On 6 and 7 December 2023, the Solidarity Arbitration and Mediation Days (SAMD) conference took place in Warsaw, Poland. The event brought together leading practitioners and academics from Ukraine, Poland, and other countries to discuss the future of dispute resolution, in particular in the CEE region. The conference was organized on a non-profit basis, with the revenues transferred to a scholarship fund for Ukrainian students and junior lawyers.
